Der ewige Kampf ums Wasser - Interview mit Clemens Messerschmid

As Israel steps up its demolition programme the EU logo gets lost in the rubble - The villagers of Umm Al Khair look out at the remains of their EU-funded community center that now lies as rubble. Villagers tell of it as a place where they watched football, did education trainings, community meetings and how it would soon become a kindergarten. The destruction has come as no surprise however, since this is the third set of demolitions in Umm al Khair since the start of the year, with over 15 structures being demolished in a town of just 150 people.

The rate of house demolitions in the West Bank is at the highest it has been in 10 years, with more demolitions in the first 4 months of 2016 than the whole of 2015. As illegal settlements continue to expand Palestinians, especially in the south Hebron hills, are more at risk than ever of losing their homes. Despite condemning the demolitions the EU has not taken any action concerning the 74 million dollars worth of EU projects destroyed by Israeli bulldozers. As the town looks for aid to rebuild its fallen buildings the question is if the EU will continue to turn a blind eye to Israel’s destruction of their projects including schools, playgrounds and housing that have all fallen under demolition orders. >>>

Amnesty International: ‘Secret trial’ of Gaza aid worker will not deliver justice - Israeli authorities must ensure that the trial of a detained humanitarian worker employed by the charity “World Vision” is fair and open, said Amnesty International on the eve of his trial, amid reports that the proceedings are due to take place in secret.

Mohammed al-Halabi, the manager of Gaza operations for the child-focused global development NGO, is facing 12 charges including being a member of a “terrorist organization” and siphoning off the charity’s funds for “terrorism” purposes. He was initially denied access to a lawyer, according to the PNN, and, when she was eventually allowed to meet him, he alleged that he had been seriously mistreated in custody.

The lawyer is prevented from disclosing the details of that allegation, as well as many other elements of the case, by a set of severe restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities on reporting around the case. >>>

Church of Sweden explores BDS as ‘only chance to liberate Palestinians and Israeli Jews’ - Robert Herbst - The week before last, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America became the 9th North American Christian denomination to adopt some measure of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (“BDS”), voting to implement an investment screen restricting church investments in corporations that profit from human rights abuses against Palestinians.

At the same time, across the Pond, two dioceses of the Church of Sweden (also Lutheran) sponsored a Kairos Palestine summer camp to consider ramping up the pressure on Israel by increasing the Church’s support of and participation in the BDS movement.

Disestablished in 2000, the Church of Sweden is no longer the state church, but 63% of the country are members, and it is an influential force in Swedish politics.

About 40 of its peace workers, together with a Roman Catholic and a few from the Uniting Church in Sweden (a recent merger of the Baptist Union of Sweden, the United Methodist Church and the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden) gathered at a modest beach-side hotel in Skane, on Sweden’s cool and windy Southwest coast. Virtually all had traveled or >>>

Beyond the flag - Nada Elia - What good have flags ever done? - Have they ever protected a city from the shrapnel of a bomb?” asked Palestine’s most famous revolutionary poet, the late Mahmoud Darwish.

Often described as “the national poet of a nationless people,” Darwish was a humanist above all, and consistently warned against the trappings of nationalism, even as he bemoaned the absence of “normalcy,” of the feeling of belonging, of having a recognized homeland, for Palestinians. The Palestinians should not need to say “our country is loftier and more beautiful than yours,” he wrote, and will hopefully one day only need to fly the flag “on the football pitch,” and “on Nakba day.”

The tension Darwish elaborated on is one many activists for justice in Palestine navigate daily, as we engage in the struggle to secure the human rights of a dispossessed people denied dignity, sovereignty, and freedom, by a settler-colonial state. And while of cours >>>

Fatah slams Hamas in Gaza over threats to its members ahead of elections - The Media and Cultural Department for the Fatah movement in the southern Gaza Strip denounced the recent incidents of a physical assault and verbal harassment directed at Fatah-affiliated members in the small Palestinian territory.

In a statement released Tuesday, the committee said that they held Hamas -- the ruling party in the Gaza Strip -- responsible for the assault and threats, saying that Hamas was attempting to perpetuate the conflict between the two parties and intervene with the upcoming municipal elections to be held across the Palestinian territory in October.

The statement highlighted an incident the day prior, when unidentified armed men reportedly assaulted a Fatah elections coordinator in Bani Suheila, a Palestinian town in the southern Gaza Strip district of Khan Yunis.

Members of Ramadan Baraka’s family told Ma’an Monday afternoon that masked armed men assaulted Baraka and took him to an unknown location, where they interrogated him regarding the elections, before dumping him near Khan Yunis badly bruised on different parts of his body. >>>

The metamorphosis of a Jewish supremacist - Orly Noy - David Mizrahi, once a vocal anti-Arab hatemonger, made amends in a heartfelt Facebook post, and began preaching tolerance and acceptance. In the current climate in Jerusalem, this is a brave and commendable thing to do.

David Mizrahi was once a prominent member of La Familia, a notorious Jewish supremacist chapter of the Beitar Jerusalem fan club.

Three years ago, he famously refused to shake hands with Arab footballer Mohammed Ghadir. But on Sunday, he published the following on Facebook: “Three years ago I arrived at Mohammed Ghadir’s home, accompanied by a Channel 2 TV crew. You can still see the footage on YouTube. Mohammed showed me great hospitality, but I was very rude to him and refused to shake his hand. It was a time I was full of racism and hatred of Arabs, lefties and anyone who thought differently. >>>

Israel to Colour-code ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ Palestinians -  Jonathan Cook – Launched this month, as much of the world was on holiday, Avigdor Lieberman’s plan for the Palestinians – retooling Israel’s occupation – received less attention than it should.

Defense minister since May, Lieberman has been itching to accelerate Israel’s annexation by stealth of the West Bank. His “carrot and stick” plan has three components. First, he intends to sideline the Palestinian Authority in favor of a new local leadership of “notables” hand-picked by Israel. Preferring to “cut out the middle man”, in his words, he will open a dialogue with supposedly more responsible Palestinians – business people, academics and mayors.

Next, he has established a new communications unit that will speak in Arabic over the heads of the PA in the West Bank and its Hamas rivals in Gaza directly to ordinary Palestinians. >>>
