Israeli Knesset Bars Reporting Names of Soldiers Accused of Killing of Palestinians -  Richard Silverstein - The Israeli Knesset has passed a new law which will punish anyone who reveals the identity of any police or Border Police officer or IDF soldier accused of committing crimes against Palestinians. Named Azarya’s Law and championed by a Labor Party MK, it condones the crimes of an IDF soldier who murdered a wounded Palestinian in cold blood and currently faces a criminal trial.

Any Israeli who exposes the names of such individuals would face a six-month jail sentence. The law would apply only to the publication of such names in Israel. It would not directly affect the work of this blog.

In a totally selfish way, I should be happy. The more fascist Israel becomes, the more important this blog becomes as a locus of resistance. The more likely Israelis who dissent against such draconian, anti-democratic measures will see Tikun Olam as a suitable outlet to turn to. >>>

Bild - Elor Azarya, in full uniform, paraded through the streets as a national hero

Israeli soldier's self-defense narrative further unravels in Hebron execution trial - The testimony of Elor Azarya continued for the third day on Tuesday, with the 19-year-old Israeli soldier’s self-defense narrative of his point-blank execution of Abd al-Fatah al-Sharif further unraveling under the Israeli army prosecution's cross-examination.

Azarya told the court Tuesday that he waited two minutes after he saw al-Sharif move before he fatally shot the severely wounded Palestinian, in contradiction to his testimony just two days prior, when he claimed he had reacted immediately, The Jerusalem Post reported from the trial.

Israeli army lead prosecutor Nadav Weissman asked Azarya: "You admit you gave wrong answers to military police?" to which Azarya replied: "You always catch me in word games. I am a simple soldier." >>>

Fatah Leaders Accuse Leadership Commission of Supporting Mohammed Dahlan - Senior Fatah leaders in Gaza have accused the new Fatah leadership commission of taking decisions in favor of the dismissed leader, Mohammed Dahlan, that reinforces his grip on the movement against Mahmoud Abbas, Al-Resalah newspaper reported.

In a letter sent to Abbas, the senior Fatah leaders said that the leadership commission in Gaza takes decisions different from those taken by Abbas and the Executive Committee.

They considered this, according to the letter, as a kind of insurgency in the movement, expecting it to cause a rift between the movement in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. >>>

Hamas leader speculates on possible peace, blames Israel - Khaled Mashal, speaking to Indian journalists in English, made moderate statements regarding a peace deal based on '67 borders with Israel; 'The problem is on the Israeli side.'

Chief of Hamas Political Bureau Khaled Mashal has once again made relatively moderate statements about his organization's involvement in any future peace accord between Israel and the Palestinians in a conversation with Indian journalists on Tuesday.

Mashal said, speaking in English, "Hamas believes that we have full rights over the whole land and we don’t recognize occupation. Our fathers and grandfathers lived there. Hamas is also very much keen on a unified Palestine front. That is why we have accepted a joint Arab and Palestine program, based on 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital, with the right of return of Palestinians expelled during years by successive Israeli governments."  >>>

Clintonites knocked out platform references to ‘occupation’ and ‘settlements’ in fear of Adelson, Zogby says - Philip Weiss - Clintonites on the Democratic Party platform committee knocked out condemnations of Israeli “settlements” and “occupation” from the platform out of fear of Sheldon Adelson, a Sanders rep on that committee said today in Philadelphia.

James Zogby of the Arab American Institute spoke at a panel convened by the US Campaign to End the Occupation and the American Friends Service Committee alongside the Democratic convention. He said that he and other Sanders delegates to the platform committee had a simple plan going into the platform debates: to remove a reference in the platform to Jerusalem being the undivided “capital of Israel” and also strike the platform’s opposition to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS).

But they lost on those points, and their strategy was off. The fight was instead to knock out Sanders-sponsored language opposing “occupation” and “settlements,” and the Sanders side lost. >>>

Netanyahu spurs growth of BDS - Ben White - Israel has defeated the BDS movement, declared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. According to Bibi – who “pulled out a world map, colour-coded to illustrate how Israel's foreign relations have improved” – BDS is “on the defensive”, and “taking hits on many fronts.”

Netanyahu made his remarks during a meeting of the State Control Committee, the background for which, as Ha’aretz described, “were two state comptroller reports published on May 24 exposing a list of Israeli failures against the BDS movement and in the state Hasbara (public diplomacy) system.”

State Comptroller Yosef Shapira claimed that the Foreign Ministry was unable “to present any significant achievements in the battle against [BDS]”, with “projects intended to improve Israel’s image in target communities around the world…failing to achieve their designated goals.” >>>

In new book, Ilan Pappé says settler colonialism and apartheid best explain Israeli-Palestinian conflict -  Ben Clarke - 25. 7. 2016

On any occasion that an activist, academic or political commentator invokes remembrances of South African apartheid to deliberately draw parallels with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they can expect an immediate and exacting rebuke. However, launching his new collaborative book in East Jerusalem on Saturday night, esteemed Israeli historian Ilan Pappé abandoned any pretence of restraint and made the intrepid and timely case that the use of apartheid descriptors when engaging in Israel/Palestine discourse should be an indisputable starting point, not an equivocal theory up for debate. The collection which Pappé has edited, ‘Israel and South Africa: The Many Faces of Apartheid’, has assembled contributions from a wide range of respected academics, politicians, journalists and lawyers, that are all rooted in a fundamental position that recognises that the relationship the Israeli state has manufactured with its Palestinian subjects, in Israel and the occupied territories, equates to a form of apartheid. >>>

No Bibi, Palestinians succeed despite Israel — not because of it -  Orly Noy - By urging Israel’s Palestinians to take a more active role in civil society, Netanyahu erases an entire history that existed in this land before Zionism.

It is not entirely clear what drove Prime Minister Netanyahu to use this moment and release a video directed at Israel’s Arab citizens. It clocks in at just over three minutes, and I must admit that I couldn’t get through the whole thing. Maybe if it were broadcasted on FaceTime. Maybe.

But the minute and a half that I did watch were enough to see the depth of the man’s cynicism and deceptiveness, and even that no longer surprises anybody. >>>

Netanyahu accidentally calls Arabs ‘goats’ in video intended to promote ‘equality and dignity for all’- Allison Deger

In what was intended as a message to Palestinians citizens of Israel on “equality and dignity for all,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s accidentally called Arabs “goats,” and received backlash from Palestinian political parties for staging a “hypocritical charade.”

The clip, recorded in Hebrew and English versions, started with an Arabic greeting, the phrase, “Muwatinuna al arab al aezaa.” While the prime minister had meant to say, “My good friends Arab citizens,” with a slight mispronunciation his words were understood as, “my Arab goats.” >>>

McDonald's refuses to operate in Jewish settlement - Tia Goldenberg - >The McDonald's restaurant chain refused to open a branch in a West Bank Jewish settlement, the company said Thursday, adding a prominent name to an international movement to boycott Israel's settlements.

Irina Shalmor, spokeswoman for McDonald's Israel, said the owners of a planned mall in the Ariel settlement asked McDonald's to open a branch there about six months ago. Shalmor said the chain refused because the owner of McDonald's Israel has a policy of staying out of the occupied territories. The decision was not coordinated with McDonald's Corp. headquarters in the U.S., she said. In an email, the headquarters said "our partner in Israel has determined that this particular location is not part of his growth plan." >>>
