Democrats big tent shrinking as Clinton ties up nomination - Wilson Dizard - The Academy Awards of Democratic Party politics continued into its fourth day on Thursday after Hillary Clinton clinched the nomination from the party of the people on Tuesday.

Protests outside the Wells Fargo Center continue, and sometimes include dissident Bernie Sanders’ delegates who have come to feel the Democratic party doesn’t want them around, and that security confiscates their signs.

“The DNC has its reps ripping up signs that support Palestinian rights so ppl can’t take them out of the trash,” tweeted journalist Rania Khalek. >>>

Hillary Clinton Personally Ensured Pro-Israel Platform, Says Adviser - Hillary Clinton personally asked an adviser, Wendy Sherman, to make sure the Democratic Party platform remained pro-Israel, Sherman said. “I had very direct instructions from Secretary Clinton that there would be clarity about this issue and there would be no space,” Sherman, a member of the committee drafting the platform, said Tuesday at an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

A debate broke out during the drafting of the platform last month over mentioning Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Israeli settlements. Philosopher Cornel West pushed for the provisions to be added, but the effort failed.

The Republican Party platform’s Israel section did change this year. It no longer includes support of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and opposes “any measures intended to impose an agreement or to dictate borders or other terms.” >>>

Congressman Apologises for Likening Israeli Settlements to Termite Infestations - A US Democratic congressman who was harshly criticized for comparing illegal West Bank settlers to termites has apologized for his remarks.

Hank Johnson, a Georgia representative, said during an event for the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, “… almost like termites can get into a residence and eat before you know that you’ve been eaten up and you fall in on yourself, there has been settlement activity that has marched forward with impunity and at an ever increasing rate to the point where it has become alarming.” >>>

25 Leute sollen hier wohnen.

Jerusalem municipality ‘taking advantage’ of US elections to expand settlements - Annie Robbins - Never let a serious crisis go to waste. This is the first thought that crossed my mind when I read Israel National News headline: ‘We’re taking advantage of the US elections to build’:

We’re taking advantage of the upcoming government change in the US to push projects forward that had been stalled, said the Head of the Municipal Council for Planning and Building, Vice-Mayor Meir Turgeman.

Another source added that “The Prime Minister’s silence on this matter is a green light as far as we’re concerned.”

Israel will use every opportunity to expand the breadth of their illegal colonies on Palestinian land, and the US election season is no exception. Jerusalem Online picked up the story too reporting “Jerusalem construction accelerated due to US elections“. The articles claim officials from the Jerusalem Municipality told Channel 2 News that plans to build 57 new housing units over the green line in the occupied East Jerusalem colony of Ramot had been fast-tracked because of U.S. election season and “the accelerated process is not a coincidence”.

Last year when the national planning committee (VATMAL) approved a huge expansion of Ramot (1,638 housing units on 10 acres) environmentalists slammed the plan saying it would threaten the environment. Even Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barak said it would “bring serious harm to the city.” And this May the Municipality’s chief engineer, Shlomo Eshkol, decried the program for not “following the guidelines of the city’s urban renewal plan“. >>>

Israel uses Caterpillar equipment in apparent extrajudicial killing - Ali Abunimah Rights and Accountability - Israeli occupation forces used a Caterpillar excavator to carry out the apparent extrajudicial execution of a Palestinian man using the so-called pressure cooker procedure in which construction equipment is employed as a lethal weapon, analysis by The Electronic Intifada shows.

Caterpillar, based in Peoria, Illinois, has long been the focus of boycott and divestment campaigns for selling equipment Israel uses in human rights abuses and war crimes, including the demolitions of homes and construction of settlements on occupied Palestinian land.

Late on Tuesday night, Israeli forces massed in the town of Surif, near the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, and launched an assault on a house in which they besieged Muhammad al-Faqih. The Israelis eventually demolished the house with al-Faqih still inside. >>>

Video: Israeli night raids on sleeping Palestinian children - Ali Abunimah

 - Israeli human rights group B’Tselem today released two harrowing videos of heavily armed Israeli soldiers raiding the bedrooms of Palestinian children in the middle of the night.

The first video, above, is titled “Night search of Sameeh and Mai D’ana’s home, Hebron, 24 February 2015.” The video was shot during a night raid on ten homes in the occupied West Bank city. B’Tselem does not say who shot the video, but typically the videos it releases are made by Palestinians.

After forcing the children – at least one as young as four – out of their beds, the video shows the soldiers in full combat gear, armed with rifles and hand grenades, photographing and interrogating them. The father asks the soldiers why they are invading his home in the middle of the night.

“Because stones are thrown at us all day long,” one soldier replies. “What’s that to us?” the father asks. “I don’t have to explain my schedule,” the soldier shouts and orders the father to “go wake up your children.”

We see the soldiers follow the father into the room and order the children – one of whom is visually impaired – out of bed. The soldiers then interrogate the children, including the four-year-old.

“Do you think he understands?” the father asks. “Yes, I think so,” the soldier says. A short time later the soldiers leave.

Children terrorized

This video is titled “Night search of Nayef and Dalal D’ana’s home, Hebron, 24 February 2015.”
  - It shows the soldiers forcing their way into a home and shouting to wake everyone up, demanding their ID cards. The mother protests that the children are young and asleep. The soldier shouts at her, “Get them all here.” The mother tries to persuade the soldier, telling him the children will be terrorized, but the assault on the home continues and the soldiers enter a bedroom occupied by the family’s sleeping children. >>>

US leaders must confront an uncomfortable truth — one of our greatest allies enforces a brutal, violent oppression - Harry Gunkel - There is a Palestinian village in the West Bank called Bil’in. Several years ago, the barrier built by Israel to separate itself from Palestinians illegally encroached onto land belonging to the people of Bil’in, cutting them off from their land and livelihoods. Soon, villagers began weekly nonviolent demonstrations against the barrier to voice their objections to the barrier and the occupation that gave birth to it. The story of Bil’in is powerfully told in the Academy Award-nominated documentary 5 Broken Cameras.

Nowadays, villagers are often joined in the demonstration by activists from around the world and often by Israeli Jews who go to Bil’in illegally to support Palestinian resistance. I joined the demonstration on two occasions. As we walked together along the dirt and gravel pathway from the village toward the barrier, we crested a small rise. About 200 meters ahead, at the crest of another small hill, arrayed in front of the barrier were several military vehicles and soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). It was difficult to estimate the number of soldiers – perhaps 20-25 – as they wandered among the vehicles and broke off into groups, some taking positions behind trees and rocks on our right flank. The soldiers were in full combat array with helmets, body armor, weapons, and grenades. We wore kufiyahs. >>>
